World Cup 1930: Mimpi Jadi Kenyataan

SEPAK bola terus mendapatkan popularitasnya di dunia pada dekade 1920-an. Ini membuat otoritas sepak bola dunia, FIFA, mulai bermimpi bagaimana menggelar turnamen internasional sepak bola yang punya pengaruh besar.

FIFA yang diketuai Jules Rimet, sempat memasukkan sepak bola di Olimpiade 1924 dan dimenangkan oleh Uruguay. Namun, gemanya masih belum besar. Selain itu muncul konflik siapa yang akan mengatur turnamen itu, FIFA atau Komite Olimpiade Internasional (IOC).

Kompetisi sepak bola internasional pada 1924 itu sebenarnya sukses. Maka, FIFA mencoba membuat turnamen sendiri pada 1928 dengan tuan rumah Hungaria. Namun, tak banyak peminat dan hanya empat tim yang tampil sehingga bisa dikatakan gagal.

Jules Rimet kemudian mengutus Sekretaris Jenderal Federasi Sepak Bola Perancis (FFF), Henri Delauney. Dia pun mulai merancang turnamen besar. Dan, pada 1930 impian itu akhirnya terwujud. Piala Dunia pertama kali itu digelar di Uruguay.

Kenapa Uruguay? Alasannya, karena negara itu juara bertahan cabang sepak bola Olimpiade. Selain itu, pada tahun tersebut bertepatan dengan 100 tahun kemerdekaan Uruguay dan negeri itu akan merayakan besar-besaran.

Untuk menggelarnya, Uruguay melakukan persiapan cukup serius. Mereka membangun stadion raksasa di ibukota Montevideo. Stadion Centenario itu kapasitas 95.000 penonton.

Pekerjaan besar ini sempat tertunda karena hujan lebat. Sampai 5 hari sebelum pembukaan pada 13 Juli 1930, pembangunan stadion masih belum rampung benar. Namun, stadion itu akhirnya tetap bisa digunakan untuk gelaran sepak bola terbesar dunia itu.

Sayangnya, banyak negara yang menolak tampil di Piala Dunia pertama tersebut. Alasannya, mereka tak mau membuang waktu di kapal menuju Uruguay. Maklum, saat itu transportasi kapal laut lebih dominan dan pesawat terbang belum banyak.

Tim-tim kuat seperti Italia, Belanda, Inggris, dan Spanyol memilih absen, Akibatnya, hanya ada empat tim dari Eropa yang datang, yakni Perancis, Yugoslavia, Rumania, dan Belgia. Bahkan, kehadiran Rumania pun harus dijemput langsung oleh Raja Carol agar berpartisipasi.

Namun, tim-tim kuat Benua Amerika banyak yang datang, seperti Meksiko, Argentina, Amerika Serikat, Cile, Bolivia, Brasil, dan Paragua. Termasuk tuan rumah Uruguay, Piala Dunia 1930 diiukti 13 tim. Partai Perancis lawan Meksiko Meksiko menjadi pembuka dengan kemenangan Perancis 4-1.

Sebagai informasi, tak ada perempat final di turnamen ini. Juara grup langsung lolos ke semifinal. Meski begitu, Argentina dan Uruguay yang sangat dominan dan tampil menawan. Di semifinal, Argentina menghajar Amerika Serikat 6-1. Uruguay menang dengan skor 6-1 lawan Yugoslavia.

Tanggal 30 Juli 1930 menjadi saat paling bersejarah dalam sepak bola. Final Piala Dunia pertama mempertemukan tuan rumah dengan Argentina di final. Disaksikan 93.000 penonton, pertandingan berlangsung seru dan mengesankan.

Di babak pertama, Uruguay sempat unggul lebih dulu, tapi kemudian Argentina segera mengejar dan unggul 2-1. Sepertinya, Argentina bakal tampil sebagai juara. Namun, di babak kedua tuan rumah tampil garang dan mencetak 3 gol, hingga menang 4-2. Uruguay pun akhirnya tampil sebagai juara Piala Dunia pertama.

Meski Piala Dunia 1930 hanya diikuti 13 tim dan tidak memakai babak kualifikasi, namun ini menjadi tonggak sejarah besar. Awal dari pentas akbar sepak bola dunia yang sangat memengaruhi manusia. 

World Cup 1934 : Vittoria Pozzo Menjawab "Tantangan" Mussolini

Dalam diri Benito Mussolini, Italia memiliki pemimpin yang ingin menggunakan segala cara dan alat untuk menyebarluaskan informasi dan pesan dari negaranya. Jadi, ketika FIFA menyatakan bahwa Piala Dunia 1934 digelar di Italia, hal itu dipandang sebagai sarana propaganda bagi Il Duce dan, sebagai konsekuensinya, Italia harus memenangi ajang itu.

Untungnya, Italia memiliki pelatih visioner dalam diri Vittoria Pozzo. Dikenal sebagai pelatih pertama berpemahaman taktik mumpuni, Il Vecchio Maestro menjawab "tantangan" Mussolini. Ia membawa Italia mencetak rekor sebagai tim Eropa pertama yang menjuarai Piala Dunia, seperti Uruguay, di kandang sendiri.

Kebanggan Uruguay sebagai tuan rumah dan Piala Dunia pertama tak bisa digantikan. Namun, Italia juga layak berbangga diri menjuarai Piala Dunia edisi kedua, mengingat Piala Dunia 1934 diikuti lebih banyak peserta dan digelar di lebih banyak kota.

Piala DUnia 1930 Uruguay diikuti 13 peserta dan semua pertandingan berlangsung di Montevideo. Piala Dunia pertama dinilai sukses sehingga semakin banyak negara yang ingin tampil di Piala Dunia 1934 Italia. FIFA pun memperkenalkan babak kualifikasi untuk menyaring 32 tim menjadi 16 tim.

Uniknya, Uruguay sama sekali tak masuk daftar peserta Piala Dunia 1934. Mereka menolak mengikuti ajang itu sebagai "balas dendam" karena Italia tak tampil di Piala Dunia 1930. Uruguay pun mencetak sejarah sebagai satu-satunya juara bertahan yang tak tampil untuk mempertahankan gelar juaranya.

Piala Dunia 1934 diawali dengan babak penyisihan yang terdiri dari delapan pertandingan. Setiap pertandingan digelar di kota berbeda. Kota yang menjadi kota penyelenggara adalah Bologna, TUrin, Florence, Genoa, Naples, Milan, Roma, dan Trieste.

Italia memulai perjalanan mereka menuju juara dengan mengalahkan Amerika Serikat 7-1 di Roma, pada 27 Mei 1934. Mereka kemudian bertemu Spanyol di babak perempat final.

Italia berhasil menyingkirkan Spanyol pada pertandingan ulang perempat final dengan skor 1-0, di Florence, 1 Juni 1934. Pertandingan ulang digelar setelah Italia dan Spanyol bermain 1-1 hingga akhir babak tambahan, pada laga perempat final di Florence, 31 Mei 1934. Inilah kali pertama peraturan tanding ulang diperkenalkan.

Di babak semifinal, Italia bertemu Austria. Mereka menang 1-0 atas Austria berkat gol Enrique Guaita pada menit ke-19 dan dengan begitu meraih tiket masuk final.

Ceko menjadi lawan Italia di babak final. Italia mengunci gelar juara setelah menang 2-1 melalui babak tambahan. Sementara gol Ceko dicetak Antonin Puc pada menit ke-71, gol Italia dicetak Raimundo Orsi (81) dan Angelo Schiavito (95).

Trivia:

Luis Monti yang tampil untuk Argentina pada Piala Dunia 1930 membela Italia pada Piala Dunia 1934.

Pemain Italia Luigi Allemandi diskors seumur hidup karena menerima suap, tetapi sanksi itu dicabut sehingga Allemandi bisa membela Italia di putaran final Piala Dunia 1934.

Pertandingan ulang babak perempat final antara Italia dan Spanyol digelar kurang dari 24 jam setelag laga pertama.

World Cup 1938: Indonesia Unjuk Gigi

SEPAK bola Indonesia tak perlu berkecil hati. Negeri ini ternyata pernah tampil di Piala Dunia pada 1938 di Perancis.

Namun, saat itu Indonesia yang masih dalam jajahan Belanda, memakai nama Hindia Belanda. Di babak kualifikasi, Indonesia bertemu Jepang. Namun, "Negeri Matahari" mengundurkan diri, sehingga Indonesia langsung ke putaran final.

Saat itu, sepak bola Indonesia cukup bagus untuk ukuran Asia. Mereka datang ke Perancis mengandalkan pemain seperti Mo Heng, Hu Kom, Samuels, Nawir, Meng, Anwar, Hong Dijen, Soedarmadji, Sommers, Pattiwael, Taihuttu.

Pengalaman internasional pertama terjadi pada 5 Juni di Stadion Velodrome Municipal, Reims. Indonesia langsung bertemu tim kuat Hungaria di putaran pertama. Kualifas dan pengalaman menjadi pembeda. Indonesia dibantai Hungaria 0-6. Meski hanya lewat, namun Indonesia membuat sejarah, minimal pernah tampil di Piala Dunia.

Ini Piala Dunia yang masih diliputi nuansa politik menjelang Perang Dunia II. Pennguasa Jerman, Adolf Hitler, sebenarnya ingin negerinya menjadi tuan rumah. Dia akan menggunakan ajang ini sebagai propaganda, menyaingi Benito Mussolini yang memanfaatkan Piala Dunia 1934 di Italia.

Argentina juga mengajukan diri sebagai tuan rumah. Namun, setelah rapat panjang, Argentina ditolak karena kekhawatiran terhadap persiapan mereka. Lagi pula, FIFA trauma akan banyuak tim Eropa absen seperti saat di Uruguay.

FIFA berusa menghindari wilayah politis. Akhirnya, diputuskan Perancis sebagai tuan rumah, karena dianggap netral. Selain itu, Perancis pantas mendapat kehormatan, karena jasa Jules Rimet dan Henri Delaunay, tokoh Perancis yang membidani Piala Dunia.

Sebanyak 37 tim mengikuti kualifikasi, tapi sebagian mengundurkan diri. Putaran final yang diikuti 18 tim, kembali menggunakan sistem gugur seperti Piala Dunia 1934. Italia sebagai juara bertahan, masih superior dan akhirnya kembali juara. 

World Cup 1950: Kebangkitan dari Perang

PERANG Dunia II menghancurkan banyak segi kehidupan, termasuk sepak bola. Pesta sepak bola sejagad, Piala Dunia, yang dirintis sejak 1930 pun jadi terhenti. Terakhir digelar pada 1938, setelah itu perang berkecamuk di mana-mana.

Selepas Perang Dunia II, FIFA ingin membangkitkan kembali Piala Dunia. Rencana semula dalam Kongres FIFA Luksemburg pada Juli 1946, Piala Dunia akan digelar digelar lagi pada 1949. Tak ada yang berani menjadi tuan rumah, karena perang telah menghabiskan banyak biaya dan tenaga.

Brasil kemudian mengajukan diri, karena negerinya tak terlibat perang. Negeri ini pun menjadi satu-satunya calon tuan rumah dan akhirnya dikukuhkan pada kongres FIFA tersebut. Namun, waktunya bukan 1949, melainkan 1950.

Semua orang setuju Piala Dunia digelar di Amerika Latin, karena Eropa hancur lebur oleh perang. Selain itu, dua Piala Dunia sebelumnya selalu digelar di Eropa.

Piala Dunia 1950 itu amat penting artinya. Selain membangkitkan kembali Piala Dunia setelah perang, juga akan diperkenalkan trofi baru, yakni Jules Rimet. Trofi itu juga untuk merayakan 25 tahun kepemimpinan Jules Rimet di FIFA.

Selain itu, untuk pertama kalinya, Inggris yang dikenal punya sepak bola bagus, ikut serta. Sebanyak 13 tim tampil di putaran final. Dari Eropa, tim yang tampil adalah Swis, Yugoslavia, Inggris, Spanyol, Swedia, dan Italia. Selebihnya tim dari Benua Amerika. Tak ada wakil dari Asia atau Afrika.

Piala Dunia ini juga diawali babak kualifikasi yang diikuti 34 tim, tapi akhirnya tersaring 13 tim. Di putaran final, 13 tim dibagi ke dalam empat grup. Juara grup akan tampil di Pool Final yang saat itu terdiri dari uruguay, Brasil, Swedia, dan Spanyol.

Di pool final itu, mereka saling bertemu. Dua tim teratas akan bertemu di final. Barsil menduduki urutan pertama dan Uruguay kedua, sehingga mereka tampil di final. Namun, Uruguay akhirnya menang 2-1 dan juara untuk kedua kalinya.

Piala Dunia 1950 ini menjadi tonggak penting, karena setelah itu gelaran yang sama bisa diselenggarakan secara rutin secara empat tahunan hingga kini. 

World Cup 1954: Pembalasan Jerman Barat

SWISS mendapat kehormatan sebagai tempat penyelenggaraan Piala Dunia kelima, dan ajang ini juga menjadi puncak ulang tahun ke-50 markas FIFA yang berada di Zurich. Negera ini telah mendapat jaminan turnamen sepak bola antar-negara tersebut usai kongres perang dunia pertama 1946, dan mereka telah menghabiskan waktu selama delapan tahun untuk membangun stadion baru sebagai tempat pertandingan.

Sebenarnya, stadion-stadionnya kecil dengan daya tampung yang kecil pula. Tetapi Swiss mampu meraup keuntungan finansial yang besar, karena mereka pandai memanfaatkan bisnis turnamen ini yang pastinya sangat menarik minat seluruh pemirsa pecinta sepak bola di seluruh dunia. Dan, di Swiss inilah untuk pertama kalinya pertandingan ditayangkan televisi meskipun masih dalam lingkup terbatas.

Pada Piala Dunia Swiss ini, presiden FIFA Rodolphe Seeldrayers kembali membuat perubahan pada format turnamen. Pria asal Belgia tersebut mengusulkan agar 16 tim yang tampil dibagi dalam empat grup yang masing-masingnya dihuni dua tim unggulan yang tidak perlu harus saling bertarung di fase grup ini. Dan, di babak ini juga diperkenalkan sistem perpanjangan waktu jika skor pertandingan tetap imbang.

Di Piala Dunia ini, yang untuk pertama kalinya terselenggara di Eropa setelah Perang Dunia II, Hungaria menjadi kekuatan baru yang sangat diperhitungkan. Pasalnya, tim Eropa Timur ini bermain paling agresif dan menjadi pencetak gol tersubur, yang belum terjadi di Piala Dunia-Piala Dunia sebelumnya.

Lihat saja perjalanannya menuju babak final. Mereka tampil sangat beringas untuk menggasak Jerman Barat 8-3, selanjutnya membantai Korea Selatan 9-0. Tak heran jika Hungaria menjadi favorit juara. Di sini pula lahir beberapa bintang top seperti Puskas, Kocsis (menjadi top skor), Hidegkuti dan Czibor.

Tim lain yang juga menjadi favorit adalah Uruguay karena mereka masih tidak terkalahkan selama babak penyisihan grup. Ini merupakan prestasi terbaik sepanjang sejarah Piala Dunia. Negara Amerika Selatan ini lolos ke perempat final setelah mengalahkan Cekoslovakia dan Skotlandia.

Di babak delapan besar, terjadi sebuah rekor baru untuk Piala Dunia ketika Austria bertemu Swiss. Pasalnya tercipta 12 gol, di mana Austria menjadi pemenang dengan skor 7-5. Sampai sekarang, skor tertinggi di fase knock-out ini belum terpecahkan.

Sedangkan di partai lain, Uruguay melanjutkan kiprahnya dengan menggulung Inggris 4-2, begitu juga dengan Hungaria yang menggilas Brasil 4-2, dalam duel terbrutal yang pernah terjadi di ajang sepak bola paling bergengsi ini. Pertarungan Hungaria vs Brasil ini disebut juga dengan "The Battle of Berne", karena tiga pemain dikartumerah dan pertarungan berlanjut sampai peluit akhir berbunyi. Sementara itu, Jerman Barat sudah pulih lagi usai disikat Hungaria di babak pertama, dengan mengalahkan Yugoslavia 2-0.

Dari hasil-hasil tersebut, muncullah tim yang lolos ke semifinal di mana dua tim favorit, Uruguay dan Hungaria, harus bertemu untuk memperebutkan tiket ke final. Di partai lain, Jerman Barat bertemu tetangganya, Austria.

Uruguay yang untuk pertama kalinya berpartisipasi pada Piala Dunia yang diselenggarakan di Eropa, memberikan perlawanan gigih. Dan, pertarungan kedua tim ini berlanjut hingga babak perpanjangan waktu dan Hungaria keluar sebagai pemenang dengan skor 4-2. Hasil ini juga mengakhiri rekor Uruguay yang tak terkalahkan sepanjang turnamen ini.

Sementara itu, Jerman Barat terus menunjukkan grafik penampilan yang meningkat. Di babak empat besar ini mereka menggelontor gawang Austria sebanyak enam kali, sedangkan gawangnya hanya kebobolan satu kali. Alhasil, Jerman Barat pun melangkah ke final dengan modal kemenangan 6-1 untuk menciptakan final yang sangat bergengsi.

Rupanya, eforia di babak empat besar ini berlanjut hingga ke final. Tampil dengan semangat berlipat ganda untuk membalas sakit hatinya akibat dipermalukan pada babak penyisihan grup, Jerman Barat menang dengan skor 3-2.

Tetapi perjalanan "Der Panzer" untuk mengukir prestasi ini diwarnai pertandingan yang dramatis. Bagaimana tidak, mereka sempat tertinggal 0-2 dan bayang-bayang kehancuran akibat kekalahan 3-8 mulai terbayang lagi.

Namun, Jerman Barat kembali memperlihatkan mental juaranya. Tim yang terkenal dengan permainan 'terlambat panas' sehingga mendapat julukan "tim Panser" ini mampu membalikkan keadaan dengan mencetak tiga gol balasan, sekaligus memastikan diri untuk pertama kalinya menggondol trofi paling bergengsi ini. Sebuah pembalasan yang manis dan sempurna karena berujung pada gelar juara dunia. Sedangkan di partai perebutan medali perunggu, Austria keluar sebagai pemenang dengan skor 3-1. 

World Cup 1958: Pele Mengentak Dunia

PIALA Dunia 1958 masih tetap berlangsung di Eropa, dan Swedia mendapat kehormatan untuk pertama kalinya menjadi tuan rumah. Di sini pula, turnamen empat tahunan ini diliput oleh televisi dan disiarkan secara internasional.

Format kompetisi pun berganti lagi. 16 tim dibagi dalam empat grup seperti pada tahun 1954, tetapi sekarang semua tim yang tergabung dalam satu grup harus saling berhadapan, tetapi tim yang berada di peringkat dua dan ketiga harus melewati babak play-off. Pada fase grup ini tak ada perpanjangan waktu. Dua tim teratas akan melaju ke perempat final, dan setelah itu formatnya menggunakan sistem knock-out.

Pada tahun ini, tak ada lagi sistem unggulan seperti pada 1954, tetapi setiap grup dihuni satu tim dari Eropa Barat, satu dari Eropa Timur, satu dari Inggris dan satu dari Amerika Latin. Dengan format ini, Inggris harus menerima kenyataan pahit karena satu grup dengan Brasil, Rusia dan peraih medali perunggu 1954, Austria.

Sementara itu, kekuatan Hungaria sudah sangat keropos menyusul kepergian pemain-pemain topnya seperti Puskas, Kacsis dan Czibor, yang meninggalkan negara ini pada tahun 1956 akibat invasi Uni Soviet ke negera mereka. Tak heran jika Hungaria yang di Piala Dunia sebelumnya sangat perkasa dan menakutkan, kini tak berdaya sehingga langsung tersingkir di fase grup.

Sebaliknya, Uni Soviet yang untuk pertama kalinya ikut Piala Dunia, langsung menebar ancaman. Negara "Beruang Merah" ini menjadi favorit.

Di ajang ini, muncul sosok baru bernama Pele, yang menghentak dunia. Pemain Brasil ini sangat menarik perhatian karena aksi-aksinya yang menawan. Sempat absen di pertandingan pertama, Pele mulai membuat kejutan ketika membawa Brasil menahan imbang Inggris dengan skor 0-0. Hasil imbang tanpa gol ini merupakan yang pertama kalinya di Piala Dunia. Dari sini, Brasil sangat difavoritkan menjadi juara, apalagi mereka melakukan inovasi dengan mengusung skema 4-2-4.

Striker Perancis Juste Fontaine juga membuat sensasi karena menjadi top skor Piala Dunia ini setelah mengoleksi 13 gol. Dia sukses membawa "Les Bleus" dengan mudah melewati babak penyisihan grup dan mereka merupakan tim paling produktif dengan torehan 11 gol.

Sukses juga diraih tuan rumah, Swedia, yang didampingi Wales untuk melewati penyisihan grup. Sedangkan Inggris dan Skotlandia tak bisa melanjutkan kiprahnya, karena tak mampu melewati fase grup.

Di perempat final, tak ada kejutan. Seperti yang diperkirakan, Jerman Barat menyingkirkan Yugoslavia dengan skor tipis 1-0, tuan rumah mengeliminasi Uni Soviet berkat kemenangan 2-0, kemudian Fontaine membawa Perancis membantai Irlandia Utara 4-0. Di partai lain, Pele menjadi pahlawan Brasil karena gol pertamanya di Piala Dunia membawa "Selecao" menembus semifinal meskipun hanya menang 1-0 atas Wales.

Memasuki babak-babak selanjutnya, pesta gol terjadi. Bayangkan, mulai semifinal hingga final, tercipta 27 gol! Pada babak empat besar Swedia menggulung Jerman Barat yang merupakan juara bertahan, dengan skor 3-1. Sedangkan pada partai lain, Pele memukau publik lewat hat-trick untuk menghentikan laju Fontaine dan kawan-kawan. Brasil menang 5-2 atas Perancis. Alhasil, Brasil bertemu Swedia di final.

Namun sebelum dunia menyaksikan pertai seru antara Brasil dan Swedia, para pecinta sepak bola dunia lebih dulu disuguhkan pertai sembilan gol antara Perancis dan Jerman Barat, untuk memperebutkan medali perunggu. Di sini Fontaine melengkapi prestasinya sebagai top skor (13 gol) berkat empat gol yang dihasilkannya untuk membawa Perancis menang 6-3. Fontaine juga menorehkan sejarah sebagai pencetak gol terbanyak dalam satu Piala Dunia.

Pada partai puncak, Pele lagi-lagi menunjukkan tajinya sebagai pemain bintang. "Si Mutiara Hitam" ini membawa Brasil menjadi juara setelah menekuk tuan rumah 5-2. Hasil tersebut membuat Brasil sebagai satu-satunya negara dari benua Amerika yang menjadi juara di Eropa dan sampai sekarang belum ada negara yang mampu menyamai prestasi tersebut--dalam sejarah, ketika Piala Dunia dilangsungkan di Eropa, maka negara dari benua Eropa yang menjadi juara, begitu juga sebaliknya, ketika diadakan di benua Amerika maka negara dari benua ini yang menjadi juara. Kecuali pada Piala Dunia 2002, di mana Brasil menjadi juara untuk kelima kalinya ketika Piala Dunia diselenggarakan di Korea-Jepang. 

World Cup 1962: Brasil Pertahankan Gelar

PADA kongres FIFA tahun 1956 di Lisbon, Portugal, ada tiga negara yang secara resmi mengajukan diri untuk menjadi tuan rumah Piala Dunia 1962. Argentina, Chili, dan Jerman Barat, menyatakan kesediaan mereka untuk menyelenggarakan turnamen sepak bola antar-negara tersebut.

Jerman Barat menjadi negara pertama yang "tersingkir", karena hampir semua peserta kongres tidak sepakat jika Piala Dunia untuk ketiga kalinya secara berturut-turut diselenggarakan di benua Eropa. Karena itu, Argentina menjadi negara terfavorit untuk menjadi tuan rumah, karena selain budaya sepak bolanya, dan memiliki sejumlah stadion besar, antusiasme penduduknya juga sangat tinggi. Mereka semakin menjadi kandidat terkuat ketika Chili diguncang gempa dasyat pada Mei 1960, yang menurut laporan menewaskan sekitar 5.000 orang.

Namun tak disangka, Chili ditunjuk sebagai negara penyelenggara Piala Dunia 1962. Lobi dan alasan menyentuh dari Presiden FA Chili, Carlos Dittborn, menarik simpati FIFA. "Kami tidak memiliki apa-apa, sehingga kami harus menjadi tuan rumah Piala Dunia," demikian pernyataan Dittborn, yang membuat FIFA trenyuh dan akhirnya menjatuhkan pilihan Chili sebagai tuan rumah.

Dalam kurun waktu dua tahun setelah bencana gempa bumi itu, Chili bergerak cepat untuk membangun stadion-stadion baru, termasuk National Stadium di Santiago, yang selesai tepat waktu saat turnamen dimulai. Untuk ukuran sebuah negara miskin, Chili yang menjadi tuan rumah tidak terlalu mengecewakan FIFA, meskipun panitia masih harus belajar lebih banyak lagi tentang sepak bola.

Tak seperti pada perhelatan-perhelatan sebelumnya, di sini untuk pertama kalinya terjadi sebuah kejutan di babak kualifikasi. Swedia yang di Piala Dunia terakhir menjadi runner-up, harus tersingkir lebih awal karena tidak mampu melewati penyisihan grup. Sementara itu, Brasil yang mengusung semua kekuatannya ketika menjadi juara 1958, tampaknya masih tetap menjadi favorit. Hanya ada satu tambahan pemain, yaitu Amarildo, yang dipanggil untuk menggantikan Pele yang cedera pada pertandingan kedua.

Pada 2 Juni, terjadi peristiwa terburuk dan merupakan hari paling kelam dalam sejarah Piala Dunia, ketika Chili bertemu Italia di babak penyisihan Grup B. Disaksikan sekitar 70.000 penonton di Santiago, terjadi perkelahian di lapangan hijau yang mengakibatkan dua orang pemain Italia diusir keluar lapangan karena mendapat kartu merah. Menurut wasit asal Inggris, Aston, pertandingan tersebut tidak terkontrol karena para pemain berkelahi dan saling menendang, sehingga polish harus turun tangan untuk meredakan situasi. Duel ini berakhir dengan skor 2-0 untuk kemenangan tuan rumah.

Setelah menyelesaikan babak penyisihan di tiap grup, muncullah delapan tim yang lolos ke perempat final. Di babak ini, Yugoslavia untuk ketiga kalinya secara berturut-turut kembali bertemu dengan Jerman Barat. Setelah selalu kalah dalam dua pertemuan sebelumnya, kali ini Yugoslavia bisa membalas lewat gol Radakovic tiga menit sebelum pertandingan usai, sehingga mereka lolos dengan kemenangan 1-0.

Sementara itu, Brasil terus menunjukkan konsistensinya. "Tim Samba" melangkah pasti ke semifinal setelah membekuk Inggris 3-1, dengan Garrincha sebagai bintang, karena jadi inspirator.

Cekoslovakia juga mengikuti jejak Yugoslavia dan Brasil, setelah menang 1-0 atas Hungaria. Kejutan juga dibikin Chili, yang di luar dugaan mengandaskan Uni Soviet dengan kemenangan 2-1.

Namun di semifinal, Chili harus bertemu dengan Brasil yang sedang dalam performa terbaik. Bisa ditebak, Brasil tak tertahankan dan memastikan diri lolos ke final setelah menang 4-2. Garrincha dan Vava membagi rata gol timnya ke gawang tuan rumah. Di partai lain, Yugoslavia gagal membendung Cekoslovakia yang berhasil meraih kemenangan 3-1, sehingga akan bertemu Brasil di partai puncak.

Meskipun gagal ke final, Chili masih bisa menghibur publiknya karena pada perebutan medali perunggu, mereka keluar sebagai pemenang setelah menaklukkan Yugoslavia 1-0. Hasil ini terbilang fantastis, karena mereka sendiri tak menyangka akan melangkah sampai semifinal.

Pada partai final, Cekoslovakia membuat kejutan karena lebih dulu memimpin. Tetapi, Brasil yang boleh diperkuat Garrincha walaupun mendapat kartu merah di semifinal, mampu keluar dari tekanan.

Tiga gol balasan bisa dilesakkan "tim Samba" untuk membalikkan keadaan sehingga menang 3-1, sekaligus mempertahankan trofi yang kali ini mereka raih tanpa harus dipekuat sang bintang di turnamen sebelumnya, Pele. 

World Cup 1966: Akhir Penantian "Tiga Singa"

DARI Amerika, Piala Dunia kembali diselenggarakan di Eropa. Inggris yang sudah menunggu selama 16 tahun sejak berpartisipasi di turnamen ini, mendapat kesempatan untuk menjadi tuan rumah. Dan, mereka sangat optimistis bisa mengakhiri penantian untuk merengkuh trofi paling bergengsi ini setelah menembus perempat final di Cile 1962.

Dengan sejumlah pemain top dan sedang berada di usia matang, pelatih Alf Ramsey merasa timnya punya potensi untuk menyingkirkan lawan mana pun. Banks, Moore, Charltons, Greaves, Hurst dan Hunt, merupakan deretan nama yang menjadi andalan "The Three Lions".

Namun menjelang bergulirnya turnamen ini, panitia sempat pusing tujuh keliling karena trofi yang diberi nama Jules Rimet ini dicuri, saat dilakukan pameran pada bulan Maret di Central Hall, Westminster. Situasi semakin runyam lantaran panitia merasa tak sanggup untuk membuat trofi baru yang mirip dengan aslinya, yang memang unik dan sulit ditiru.

Beruntung, di tengah kegalauan itu muncul kabar menggembirakan. Adalah seekor anjing bernama Pickles, yang memecahkan persoalan rumit tersebut, satu minggu setelah kasus pencurian itu. Binatang yang memiliki penciuman paling tajam ini mengendus keberadaan trofi tersebut di sekitar semak belukar di Norwood, London Selatan. Ternyata benar, setelah diperiksa ternyata trofi tersebut dibungkus dengan kertas koran. Alhasil, persiapan turnamen ini bisa berlangsung lancar lagi.

Inggris yang mendapat dukungan dari suporter fanatiknya mengawali kejuaraan ini dengan hasil yang kurang memuaskan karena hanya bermain imbang tanpa gol melawan Uruguay. Ini membuat mereka banyak mendapat kritikan. Meskipun demikian, pasukan Ramsey yang tergabung di Grup A bersama Uruguay, Perancis dan Meksiko tersebut bisa keluar dari tekanan, dan mereka akhirnya menjadi juara grup, dan lolos ke perempat final, didampingi Uruguay.

Di Grup B yang dihuni tim-tim keras, Jerman Barat dan Argentina menjadi yang terbaik, setelah menyisihkan Spanyol dan Swiss. Di sini lahirlah bintang muda Jerman, Franz Beckenbauer, yang bermain cemerlang di fase penyisihan grup ini. Dia mencetak dua gol ketika Jerman mencukur Swiss 5-0.

Argentina yang diperkuat pemain-pemain top seperti Rattin, Artime dan Onega, mengikuti jejak Jerman Barat karena menjadi runner-up. Hasil ini terbilang kurang memuaskan, karena mereka difavoritkan akan menjadi juara grup. Tetapi ketika melawan Jerman, Argentina hanya bermain imbang 0-0. Kejutan lain di grup ini adalah tersingkirnya Spanyol, sang juara Eropa. Padahal, "El Matador" datang dengan membawa seluruh kekuatannya seperti Gento, Suarez dan Del Sol.

Dari Grup C, Brasil sempat mengawali pertandingannya dengan hasil meyakinkan. Tendangan bebas spektakuler Pele dan Garrincha membawa "Selecao" menang 2-0 atas Bulgaria. Tetapi juara 1958 dan 1962 ini mendapat masalah besar saat menghadapi Hungaria, karena Pele tidak bisa tampil lantaran cedera. Sebaliknya, dua bintang Hungaria Florian Albert dan Ferenc Bene, mencuri perhatian dengan aksi-aksi menawan, yang membawa negara mereka menang 3-1 atas sang juara bertahan.

Di grup ini, Portugal yang merupakan tim debutan, menjadi jawara. Eusebio, yang berdampingan dengan Torres, Augusto, Simoes dan Coluna, membawa tim "Samba Eropa" ini maju ke perempat final. Bahkan pada pertandingan terakhir penyisihan grup, mereka meruntuhkan keperkasaan Brasil lewat kemenangan 3-1, untuk memastikan diri menjadi juara grup. Sebaliknya bagi Brasil, kekalahan ini membuat mereka tersisih, dan berakhirlah kiprah para pemain top seperti Garrincha, Bellini dan Orlando.

Kejutan besar juga terjadi di Grup D. Sama seperti Portugal, Uni Soviet yang sangat solid karena diperkuat Yashin, Shesterniev dan Porkuyan, juga menyapu bersih tiga pertandingan penyisihan sehingga mereka menjadi juara grup. Korea Utara pun tak ketinggalan. Tim debutan Asia yang dikalahkan Uni Soviet 0-3 ini juga lolos ke perempat final sebagai runner-up grup, setelah menahan imbang Chili dan menaklukkan Italia 1-0. Inilah kejutan yang paling mencengangkan dalam sejarah Piala Dunia.

Selanjutnya, Korea Utara yang merupakan tim dengan materi termuda di Piala Dunia ini, sempat merajut impian untuk masuk semifinal. Melawan Portugal di perempat final, mereka sudah memimpin 3-0 sampai dengan turun minum. Sayang, di paruh kedua Korea Utara tak mampu mempertahankannya, ketika Eusebio mencetak empat gol untuk melengkapi kesuksesan Portugal yang akhirnya lolos dengan kemenangan 5-3--ini juga masih menjadi sebuah sejarah di Piala Dunia, di mana sebuah tim tertinggal tiga gol, tetapi mampu mengejar dan menang.

Partai lainnya di babak delapan besar, Jerman Barat menggunduli Uruguay 4-0. Pertandingan dengan skor mencolok ini diwarnai dengan dua kartu merah yang diberikan kepada pemain Uruguay, sehingga Jerman Barat tak terlalu kesulitan untuk meraih tiket ke semifinal. Langkah yang sama dijuga dicapai Uni Soviet. Mengandalkan pertahanan yang kokoh, tim "Beruang Merah" ini mampu mempertahankan keunggulan 2-1 atas Hungaria dan mereka untuk pertama kalinya mencatat sejarah lolos ke semifinal.

Sementara itu di London, duel seru dan menegangkan terjadi antara Inggris vs Argentina. Bermain dengan penuh semangat karena mendapat dukungan dari suporter fanatiknya, tuan rumah bisa menjebol gawang Argentina. Geoff Hurst yang menjadi bintang pertandingan ini, karena dialah yang mencetak gol tunggal ketika pertandingan tersisa 12 menit, untuk membawa Inggris ke semifinal dan bertemu Portugal.

Di babak empat besar ini, muncullah sosok Bobby Charlton karena permainannya sangat memukau. Ini mungkin menjadi aksi terbaik Charlton bersama timnas Inggris, karena bintang klub Manchester United tersebut yang meloloskan Inggris ke final lewat dua golnya, sehingga mereka mengalahkan Portugal 2-1. Satu-satunya gol Portugal dihasilkan oleh pemain legendarisnya, Eusebio, lewat titik penalti.

Di semifinal lainnya, Jerman Barat menaklukkan Uni Soviet 2-1. Di sini Beckenbauer mencetak gol spektakuler, karena tembakannya dari jarak jauh tak mampu dihalau Yashin, salah satu kiper terbaik sepanjang masa. Yashin juga kembali harus dua kali memungut bola dari dalam jaringnya pada pertandingan perebutan tempat ketiga, ketika Eusebio memborong dua gol Portugal yang meraih kemenangan 2-1, sekaligus membawanya menjadi top skor--lebih banyak tiga gol dari striker Jerman Helmut Haller.

Pada partai final, Ramsey membuktikan bahwa prediksinya benar, yaitu bahwa Inggris menjadi juara Piala Dunia 1964 ini. Bermain di Wembley yang merupakan stadion kebanggaan negara tersebut, Inggris tampil penuh gairah.

Namun publik tuan rumah sempat terhenyak ketika Haller menjebol gawang Gordon Banks pada menit ke-12. Beruntung, hanya berselang enam menit Hurst berhasil menyamakan kedudukan, ketika dia dengan sempurna mengonversi umpan Bobby Moore menjadi gol. Skor 1-1 bertahan sampai jeda.

Di babak kedua, tepatnya menit ke-78, Martin Peters membuat stadion seolah runtuh oleh gemuruh penonton yang bersorak kegirangan. Striker Inggris ini mengoyak jala Hans Tilkowski yang membuat Inggris unggul 2-1 dan bertahan sampai menit ke-89.

Dalam waktu yang tersisa, publik Inggris tampaknya sudah merasa timnya akan menjadi juara dunia dan mereka siap-siap menggelar pesta. Tetapi, Wolfgang Weber merusak semuanya karena di masa injury time dia bisa menyamakan skor menjadi 2-2, dan memaksa perpanjangan waktu.

Pada extra time ini, Hurst kembali membuat 96.924 penonton berjingkrak kegirangan karena dia membawa Inggris unggul 3-2, saat pertandingan memasuki menit ke-101. Gol ini juga yang sampai sekarang terus menjadi kontroversi, karena para pemain Jerman Barat menilai bola yang memantul dari mistar, belum melewati garis gawang, meskipun wasit Gottfried Dienst dari Swiss mengesahkannya.

Di tengah keraguan kubu lawan tentang gol tersebut, Hurst membuat gol ketiganya dalam pertandingan itu--satu-satunya hat-trick di partai final yang sampai sekarang belum disamakan. Pada menit ke-120, Hurst kembali memaksimalkan umpan Moore dan memastikan Inggris menang 4-2, dan membuat "The Three Lions" mengakhiri penantian untuk menyabet gelar juara paling bergengsi di dunia tersebut. 

World Cup 1970: Meksiko - Momen Bersejarah Penuh Warna

PIALA Dunia Meksiko 1970 pantas boleh disebut sebagai pionir sepak bola modern. Selain munculnya rekor-rekor baru, aturan main baru dan inovasi teknologi, momen ini menandai penampilan terakhir Pele di Piala Dunia.

Piala Dunia kali ini tak pernah disangka mampu sukses, seperti Piala Dunia 1966 Inggris. Pasalnya, ini adalah untuk pertama kalinya Piala Dunia digelar di Amerika Utara. Ini juga pertama kalinya Piala Dunia dihelat di luar Amerika Selatan dan Eropa.

Namun, kekhawatiran itu tak pernah menjadi kenyataan. Penemuan televisi berwarna yang mendahului Piala Dunia 1970 Meksiko, membuat banyak orang sangat menantikan sepak bola. Mereka ingin menyaksikan, untuk pertama kalinya, bagaimana rasanya menyaksikan Piala Dunia dari layar penuh warna.

Sepak bola kemudian mendompleng kemajuan teknologi ini dan memanfaatkan Piala Dunia Meksiko 1970, untuk memperkenalkan aturan baru soal kartu kuning dan kartu merah. Untungnya, pengenalan kartu kuning dan merah tak membuat pemain latah sehingga melakukan pelanggaran yang membuat mereka terusir dari lapangan.

FIFA merasa, sikap pemain yang menjunjung sportivitas itu pantas mendapat penghargaan. Jadilah, Piala Dunia Meksiko 1970 kembali mencatatkan sejarah sebagai ajang pertama di mana FIFA memperkenalkan anugerah fairplay, yang diraih Peru.

Catatan momen penting Piala Dunia Meksiko 1970, akhirnya harus diakhiri dengan menyebut Brasil dan Pele. Brasil yang sukses menuntaskan perjalanan mereka di Meksiko sebagai juara. Itu adalah gelar juara Piala Dunia yang diraih Brasil, setelah Piala Dunia Swedia 1958 dan Piala Dunia Cile 1962. Atas Prestasinya itu, Brasil berhak menyimpan trofi Jules Rimet secara permanen. Trofi ini kemudian hilang dicuri pada 1983.

Bagi Pele, keberhasilan membawa Brasil menjuarai Piala Dunia Meksiko 1970, menjadikan dirinya manusia pertama yang menjuarai Piala Dunia sebanyak tiga kali. Ini juga menjadi penampilan terakhir Pele di Piala Dunia, karena ia memutuskan gantung sepatu dari tim nasional Brasil pada tahun 1971. 

World Cup 1974: Bangkitnya Sepak Bola Menyerang

BRASIL sudah puas menguasai Piala Dunia 1970 Meksiko. Saat itu, mereka menjadi juara, untuk yang ketiga kalinya dan karenanya berhak menyimpan trofi Jules Rimet secara permanen. Tercatatnya Pele sebagai manusia tersukses di Piala Dunia karena mengantar Brasil menjuarai tiga Piala Dunia itu, semakin mengukuhkan dominasi "Tim Samba".

Tak ada yang menyangka, pesta besar di Meksiko itu menandai berakhirnya hegemoni Brasil di Eropa. Hanya empat tahun setelahnya, tepatnya di Piala Dunia 1974 Jerman Barat, keanggunan gaya samba dilibas permainan sepak bola menyerang dan efektif Eropa, yang diwakili Belanda dan Jerman Barat.

Brasil semakin kehilangan pengaruhnya, seiring pensiunnya simbol sepak bola indah mereka, Pele, dari timnas. Di Piala Dunia 1974 Jerman Barat, nama Pele ditenggelamkan sejumlah jago-jago baru, misalnya Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, dan Gerd Muller.

Cruyff dan Muller inilah yang membuat persaingan Belanda dan Jerman Barat berlangsung ketat sampai babak puncak. Setelah bersusah payah, Jerman Barat berhasil menjuarai ajang ini mengandaskan Belanda dengan skor 2-1. Jerman pun sukses meraih ambisinya menyandingkan gelar Piala Dunia dan Piala Eropa, yang mereka raih pada 1972.

Mengingat pada turnamen kali ini, FIFA memperkenalkan Trofi Piala Dunia FIFA, sebagai pengganti Jules Rimet, tidak berlebihan bila Jerman Barat disebut sebagai pionir kebangkitan sepak bola Eropa.

Sementara itu, Brasil sendiri gagal menjaga kehormatan dan reputasi mereka setelah menyerah 0-1 kepada Polandia pada perebutan juara ketiga. 

World Cup 1978: Kontroversi yang Menenteramkan

UNTUK pertama kalinya, setelah 16 tahun, Piala Dunia 1978 kembali digelar di Amerika Selatan, tepatnya di Argentina. Mengingat situasi politik Argentina saat itu, keputusan FIFA bukannya tak mengundang kontroversi dan ancaman boikot.

Ketika FIFA memutuskan menggelar Piala Dunia 1978 di Argentina, situasi pemerintahan jauh dari keadaan aman dan tenteram. Penguasa militer saat itu menjalankan roda pemerintahan dengan tangan besi. Aksi protes melawan pemerintah selalu direspons dengan penangkapan, penyiksanaa, dan pertumpahan darah.

Sejumlah negara, termasuk yang lolos kualifikasi, mempertimbangkan melakukan boikot dengan tidak menghadiri perhelatan tersebut. Namun, perhelatan tetap dilaksanakan, tanpa kehadiran dua pemain penting, yaitu Johann Cruyff dan Franz Beckenbauer. Cruyyf tidak tampil setelah mengalami percobaan penculikan.

Selama perhelatan, peserta memang tak mengalami gangguan keamanan. Namun, sejumlah kalangan menilai, peraturan turnamen tidak adil karena cenderung mendukung Argentina. Belum lagi munculnya dugaan pengaturan skor.

Salah satu peraturan yang dinilai menguntungkan adalah, Argentina selalu bermain malam hari, sehingga mereka sudah lebih dulu mengetahui hasil lain di grup mereka.

Soal pengaturan skor, itu terjadi di fase grup putaran kedua. Saat itu, Argentina harus melawan Peru. Untuk menjadi juara Grup B dan melaju ke final, Argentina harus menang dengan selisih empat gol.

Secara luar biasa, Argentina menang 6-0. Komentator menyebut kemenangan itu terlalu mudah. Belakangan, sejumlah kalangan menilai, kiper Peru, Ramon Quiroga, terlibat konspirasi dengan Argentina. Kesimpulan ini berdasar kenyataan bahwa Quiroga merupakan pemain kelahiran Argentina. Namun, tuduhan ini tak pernah terbukti.

Kontroversi Argentina masih berlanjut ke babak final, di mana mereka berhasil menjadi juara setelah mengalahkan Belanda 3-1. Setelah pertandingan, Belanda menolak menghadiri konferensi pers karena menilai Argentina sengaja mengulur-ulur waktu kick-off.

Kontroversi mencapai puncaknya setelah di akhir turnamen, FIFA menganugerahkan penghargaan fair play kepada Argentina.

Terlepas dari berbagai kontroversi, Piala Dunia 1978 Argentina menularkan kegembiraan kepada rakyat yang sudah tersiksa rasa takut dalam dua tahun terakhir. Kiranya, ini menjadi sumbangan terbesar Mario Kempes dkk kepada negaranya.

Bagi sepak bola, hal itu semakin meneguhkan bahwa sepak bola bisa meretas batas-batas yang tak bisa ditembus sistem politik, ekonomi, atau sosial. 

World Cup 1982: Ketika Italia Menyundul Brasil

ITALIA sempat unggul 2-0 atas Brasil dalam hal koleksi gelar Piala Dunia. Namun, Brasil mampu mengejar dan unggul 3-2. Akhirnya, baru pada Piala Dunia 1982 Spanyol, Italia mampu berdiri sejajar dengan Brasil.

Sulit diduga Italia mampu melangkah sejauh itu. Pasalnya, di putaran kedua, mereka berada satu grup dengan Argentina dan Brasil. Namun, secara meyakinkan, mereka mengalahkan kedua wakil Amerika Selatan itu dan melaju ke semifinal.

Di babak empat besar, Italia kembali menemui ujian berat, yaitu menghadapi Polandia. Beruntung mereka memiliki Paolo Rossi. Di babak semifinal, Paolo Rossi mencetak dua gol yang menentukan kemenangan Italia 2-0 atas Polandia dan mengantar Italia ke final pertama mereka setelah 12 tahun.

Di final, mereka mengandaskan Jerman Barat 3-1. hasil itu membuat Italia dan Brasil sama-sama mengantongi tiga gelar juara Piala Dunia. Bedanya, karena Brasil lebih dulu mencapai gelar ketiga, mereka berhak mendapatkan Piala Jules Rimet. 

World Cup 1986: Milik Maradona

TAHUN 1986 merupakan tahun gemilang bagi persepakbolaan Meksiko, tuan rumah Piala Dunia waktu itu. Namun, bintang turnamen itu justru berasal dari Argentina, yakni sang kapten Diego Maradona. Pada tahun itu, Maradona meraih puncak kariernya di pentas internasional disertai kontroversi gol "Tangan Tuhan".

Tuan rumah Piala Dunia ke-13 sebetulnya diserahkan kepada Kolumbia. Karena masalah keuangan di negara tersebut, FIFA kemudian memindahkannya ke Meksiko. Dalam hal infrastruktur, Meksiko yang pernah menjadi tuan rumah 16 tahun sebelumnya dianggap lebih siap dibanding calon lain yakni Kanada dan Amerika Serikat. Delapan bulan sebelum penyelenggaraan PD 1986, negara di Amerika Utara itu sempat diguncang gempa bumi yang menewaskan 20.000 orang. Untunglah gempa ini tak merusak 12 stadion tempat penyelenggaraan turnamen.

Tiga negara menjalani debut mereka di putaran final, yakni Kanada, Denmark, dan Irak. Kanada dan Irak tersingkir di fase grup, demikian pula dengan kontingen Korea Selatan, yang sempat mengundang decak kagum lewat tendangan-tendangan jarak jauh para pemainnya. Denmark dengan duo pemain depan Michael Laudrup dan Preben Elkjaer-Presen membuat kejutan dengan menguasai Grup E, salah satunya dengan menekuk runner-up Jerman Barat di fase grup.

Pada turnamen kali ini, FIFA kembali memberikan peraturan baru di mana empat tim terbaik yang menduduki peringkat ketiga di masing-masing grup boleh ikut ke fase knock out bersama 12 tim yang menjadi juara dan runner-up grup. Berkat aturan ini, Belgia, Polandia, Bulgaria, dan Uruguay berhak lolos ke 16 besar. Belgia bahkan berhasil melangkah ke semifinal dengan menekuk Uni Soviet di perdelapan final dan menang adu penalti lawan Spanyol di perempat final.

Kejutan juga dibuat oleh Maroko. Mereka menjadi negara pertama dari Afrika yang berhasil lolos ke fase knock out setelah menjadi pimpinan Grup F. Di babak 16 besar, langkah mereka langsung terhenti oleh Jerman Barat. Jerman pula yang menyingkirkan tuan rumah Meksiko dalam laga alot di perempat final. Di babak ini pula, terjadi persaingan alot oleh setiap kontestan. Dari empat laga yang berlangsung, hanya partai Argentina versus Inggris yang berakhir dalam waktu 90 menit. Partai lainnya harus diakhiri dengan adu penalti.

Argentina yang hanya sekali kalah pada laga kualifikasi kemudian menaklukkan Belgia di semifinal dengan skor akhir 2-0. Kedua gol dicetak oleh Maradona dan membuat jumlah golnya di turnamen tersebut menjadi lima gol. Jumlah gol Maradona itu rupanya masih kalah dari top scorer asal Inggris, Gary Lineker. Lineker kemudian mendapat penghargaan Sepatu Emas, tetapi Maradona menjadi Pemain Terbaik berkat lima gol dan lima assist-nya dalam tujuh laga waktu itu. Salah satu gol tersebut ia buat dengan menggunakan tangan kiri ke gawang Inggris yang dijaga oleh Peter Shilton pada perempat final.

Gol pembuka Maradona di pertandingan itu kemudian dikenang sebagai "la mano de Dios" atau gol "Tangan Tuhan". Gol keduanya, tiga menit setelah gol pertama, tercipta melalui aksi solo run dari lapangan tengah, berbelok-belok mencari celah, sambil melewati lima pemain Inggris. Pada 2002, FIFA melakukan jajak pendapat dan menempatkan gol tersebut sebagai gol terbaik sepanjang abad.

Di final, Maradona tidak mencetak gol. "Albicelestes" memimpin 2-0 lebih dulu, tapi Jerman berhasil menyamakan skor. Enam menit menjelang bubar, Maradona memberikan assist cantik kepada Jorge Burruchaga dan terciptalah gol yang membawa armada Carlos Bilardo tersebut menjadi pemenang.

Maradona pun menjadi satu-satunya pemain yang begitu dominan dalam sejarah Piala Dunia.

Secara keseluruhan, tercatat 80 pemain mencetak gol di turnamen ini. Dari 132 gol, Argentina mencatat jumlah gol paling banyak yakni 15 gol, adapun Kanada menjadi satu-satunya tim yang sama sekali tak menjebol gawang lawan. Uni Soviet yang didominasi oleh pemain-pemain Dynamo Kiev mencatat skor terbesar pada penyisihan grup yakni saat mengalahkan Hungaria dengan 6-0.

Meksiko mengandalkan top scorer La Liga Spanyol, Hugo Sanchez, tapi dia justru menghabiskan banyak waktu untuk memprotes wasit dan melakukan pelanggaran yang tak perlu. Meski kalah di perempat final, "El Tri" memperlihatkan penampilan menawan dan itu merupakan penampilan terbaik mereka di Piala Dunia.

Jerman Barat, Inggris, dan Brasil masih seperti sebelumnya mengandalkan pemain-pemain bintang yang sudah menapak usia senja. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Michel Platini, dan Zico diberi kesempatan dalam laga terakhir mereka di Piala Dunia, tapi hanya Platini yang tampil cukup bagus. Rummenigge dan Zico berkutat dengan cedera lutut dan jarang bermain 90 menit penuh.

Platini dkk akhirnya bertemu Zico cs pada perempat final di Guadalajara. Platini berhasil menyamakan skor 1-1 dan pertandingan pun akhirnya harus dilanjutkan lewat adu penalti. Zico berhasil menunaikan tugas sebagai algojo, sementara Platini gagal mencetak gol dari titik putih. "Les Blues" akhirnya menang dan Platini pun bertemu Rummenigge cs di sermifinal.

Pemain termuda di turnamen ini adalah pemain tuan rumah F.J. Cruz, sedangkan pemain tertua adalah Pat Jennings, kiper Irlandia Utara. Itulah Piala Dunia terakhir bagi Jennings, tepat pada usia 41 tahun. Ia menjadi satu-satunya kiper yang pernah bermain dalam enam periode Piala Dunia. 

World Cup 1990: Miskin Gol, Pesta Kartu

UNTUK kedua kalinya, Italia menjadi tuan rumah Piala Dunia pada 1990. Negeri Pizza itu menjadi negara kedua--setelah Meksiko--yang mendapat dua kali kesempatan menggelar turnamen akbar itu. Sayang, kali ini banyak catatan negatif di ajang tersebut.

Pada kesempatan pertama tahun 1934, "Gli Azzuri" sukses menjadi juara dunia di kandangnya sendiri. Setelah 56 tahun berlalu, Italia justru dilanda kecemasan ketika harus mempersiapkan diri menjadi tuan rumah pada 1990. Mereka hanya punya waktu enam tahun untuk memperbarui 12 stadion yang ditunjuk FIFA sebagai tempat pertandingan. Renovasi stadion molor, meski akhirnya selesai sebelum pembukaan turnamen di Milan.

Putaran final kali ini bisa disebut reuni negara-negara kuat di sepak bola, tapi justru paling miskin atraksi gol. Semua pemenang Piala Dunia sebelumnya tampil di sini dan untuk kedua kalinya empat mantan juara dunia melaju ke semifinal, yakni Jerman Barat, Argentina, Italia, dan Inggris. Jerman Barat waktu itu sudah lima kali mencapai final, dua di antaranya mereka akhiri dengan menjadi juara dunia. Adapun Italia sudah tiga kali menjadi kampiun dalam empat penampilan di partai final sebelumnya. Argentina dua kali juara yakni pada 1978 dan 1986, sedangkan Inggris menang di kandang pada 1966.

Brasil yang sudah tiga kali juara dunia tampil tanpa cela di fase grup. Di babak 16 besar, mereka langsung keok di tangan Argentina, juara bertahan yang hanya mencetak tiga gol dan dua kali kebobolan di penyisihan grup. "Albicelestes" akhirnya menjadi runner-up dan secara total hanya mencetak lima gol. Diego Maradona, yang menjadi bintang empat tahun sebelumnya, tak mencetak satu pun gol.

Paceklik gol juga dialami Inggris dan Belanda. Keduanya berada di Grup F bersama Irlandia Utara dan Mesir. Inggris, Irlandia Utara, dan Belanda hanya mencetak dua gol dalam tiga laga kualifikasi grup. Inggris menjadi pemimpin klasemen gara-gara kebobolan satu gol, sementara Irlandia Utara dan Belanda kemasukan dua gol.

Di fase gugur, "The Three Lions" kembali pelit membobol gawang. Mereka selalu melewati babak tambahan waktu, termasuk ketika takluk dari Jerman Barat lewat adu penalti di semifinal. Paul Gascoigne dan Gary Lineker menjadi bintang Inggris di pentas tersebut.

Italia sendiri hanya mendapat hadiah hiburan dengan menempatkan Salvatore Schillaci sebagai pencetak gol terbanyak (6 gol) dan Pemain Terbaik di turnamen tersebut. Schillaci sebetulnya merupakan pengganti Gianluca Vialli, yang lebih difavoritkan menjadi pahlawan "Gli Azzuri". Prestasi Schillaci pun langsung hilang di turnamen berikutnya.

Prestasi dadakan juga muncul dari pemain Kamerun Roger Milla dan kiper Argentina Sergio Goycoechea. Milla yang sudah berumur 38 tahun justru menjadi favorit suporter netral. Meski berstatus sebagai pemain cadangan, ia berhasil mengantar Kamerun ke babak 16 besar berkat empat golnya. Setiap kali mencetak gol, Milla merayakannya dengan tarian unik di pojok lapangan. Tarian ini kemudian menjadi populer di pelosok dunia.

Adapun Goycoechea tampil sebagai pahlawan instan karena ia baru tampil setelah kiper utama Nery Pumpido mengalami patah tulang pada fase grup lawan Uni Soviet. Berkat Goycoechea, armada Carlos Bilardo dapat bertahan dalam adu penalti lawan Yugoslavia dan Italia sehingga Argentina pun lolos ke final. Penampilan kiper 26 tahun itu setidaknya dapat menutupi kekurangan tim "Tango", yang mencatat tiga kartu merah dan 22 kartu kuning selama turnamen berlangsung.

Pemain Jerman Barat justru tidak mendapat penghargaan tingkat individu. Lothar Mathaeus memang tampil baik selama turnamen. Spielfuehrer alias kapten yang membela Inter Milan itu selalu menjelajah setiap jengkal lapangan untuk menggali kreasi serangan. Kekuatan lainnya dibentuk oleh Rudi Voeller dan Juergen Klinsmann serta bek kiri Andreas Brehme.

Penampilan mengecewakan justru datang dari favorit juara, Belanda. Marco van Basten tidak sekali pun mencetak gol, sementara Ruud Gullit masih belum on form selepas pulih dari cedera. Penampilan terbaik Belanda pada Euro 1988 akhirnya menguap setelah ditekuk Jerman. Frank Rijkaard bahkan meludahi Voeller karena merasa diperlakukan secara rasis. Keduanya menerima kartu merah.

Total ada 16 kartu merah di turnamen ini, jumlah terbanyak di antara Piala Dunia sebelumnya. Argentina bahkan harus bermain dengan sembilan pemain di partai final setelah Pedro Monzon dan Dezotti diusir wasit. 

World Cup 1994: Kejayaan Sepak Bola Menyerang

EMPAT tahun sejak permainan defensif di Piala Dunia Italia 1990, Amerika Serikat mendapat kesempatan pertama menjadi tuan rumah turnamen tersebut. Muncul perasaan skeptis atas penunjukkan negara yang asing terhadap sepak bola itu.

Tidak mudah bagi AS untuk mendongkrak popularitas sepak bola di negara mereka. Nama football yang sudah sedemikian akrab di telinga penggemar sepak bola dunia bermakna lain di Negeri Paman Sam. Di sana, orang harus membiasakan menyebut sepak bola dengan istilah soccer.

Turnamen ini juga tak diikuti sejumlah negara besar sepak bola. Sebutlah Perancis, Portugal, dan Uruguay. Banyak pihak kemudian menyangka Piala Dunia 1994 di AS tidak akan menyedot banyak penonton.

Dugaan itu salah besar. AS justru menjadi salah satu penyelenggara paling sukses dalam penyelenggaraan Piala Dunia. Setiap pertandingan berlangsung, hampir 70.000 penonton memadati stadion.

FIFA juga menjadikan turnamen ini untuk mengubah format dan peraturan Piala Dunia. Otoritas sepak bola dunia itu mulai melarang kiper menangkap backpass dari kaki rekan satu timnya. Permainan pun menjadi lebih agresif dibanding empat tahun sebelumnya.

Untuk memotivasi gaya main menyerang, setiap tim yang memenangi laga diberi poin tiga. Sebelumnya, tim pemenang hanya diberi nilai dua. Produktivitas gol pun naik pesat meski tak mengurangi jumlah ganjaran kartu untuk para pemain.

Pemberian kartu pun mengalami perubahan. Untuk pertama kalinya, metode akumulasi kartu kuning selama penyisihan grup mulai diberlakukan. Setelah lolos ke fase knock out, pemain dengan tabungan kartu kuning diberi ampunan dengan cara "diputihkan" kembali. Di fase berikutnya, akumulasi kartu dihitung mulai dari nol.

Wasit yang memimpin pertandingan juga diperbolehkan memakai seragam dengan kelir selain hitam, ada yang pakai kuning, putih, atau jingga. Untuk pemain, seragam mereka pun tidak cuma bertuliskan nomor punggung, tapi juga memuat nama mereka.

Pendek kata, banyak perubahan di Piala Dunia kali ini dan hal itu menjadikan pertandingan berjalan lebih menarik. Pemain Rusia Oleg Salenko menjadi pemain pertama yang berhasil mencetak lima gol dalam satu pertandingan, yakni ketika melawan Kamerun. Dua tim tersebut akhirnya gagal melangkah ke fase gugur.

Nama Jerman Barat sebagai juara bertahan sudah melebur menjadi Jerman menyusul bersatunya dua negara sisi barat dan timur pada akhir 1990. Sayang, penampilan perdana Jerman ini berakhir antiklimaks. Bermain di partai pembukaan, pemain Jerman justru tampak lesu dan kurang gairah. Meski demikian, mereka dapat menaklukkan Bolivia berkat gol tunggal Juergen Klinsmann.

Tim bentukan pelatih Berti Vogts itu masih mengandalkan pemain veteran Rudi Voeller sebagai gelandang pembantu Klinsmann. Kapten Lothar Mathaeus berubah peran menjadi libero dan menghilangkan gol-gol kejutan seperti yang ia lakukan di Italia 1990. Meski menjadi juara grup, "Der Panzer" akhirnya keok di tangan Bulgaria di perempat final.

Runner-up 1990, Argentina, kembali tampil mengecewakan. Diego Maradona masih menjadi tumpuan dan memberikan hasil baik di dua laga awal. Namun, kasus penggunaan narkoba memaksanya pulang lebih dini. Gabriel Batistuta dkk pun kehilangan playmaker dan hanya finis di tempat ketiga Grup D, yang dikuasai oleh Nigeria. Kedua tim akhirnya kalah di babak 16 besar.

Kejutan diperlihatkan oleh Swedia. Pelatih Tommy Svensson mengandalkan Martin Dahlin, Tomas Brolin, dan Kennet Andersson untuk menunjukkan efisiensi permainan menyerang. Perjalanan mereka berakhir di tangan Brasil, musuh satu grup dan bertemu lagi di semifinal.

Bulgaria juga tampil menawan dan lolos ke semifinal usai mengalahkan Argentina dan Jerman di fase gugur. Di laga pertama, Bulgaria memang kalah 0-3 dari Nigeria. Namun, penampilan menarik dari Hristo Stoichkov membuat timnya terus merangkak naik. Pada akhir turnamen, Stoichkov mendapat Sepatu Emas sebagai pencetak gol terbanyak bersama dengan Salenko.

Langkah Bulgaria menemui buntu saat bertemu dengan Italia. Adalah Roberto Baggio, striker Italia yang mengubur impian mereka. Dua gol Baggio pada semifinal itu menambah koleksi golnya menjadi lima, yang paling banyak di antara kompatriotnya.

Baggio sebelumnya tampil gemilang di Italia 1990. Pada ajang kali ini, "Si Kucir Kuda" itu digadang-gadang bakal menjadi pemain terbaik. Apa boleh buat, kondisi fisiknya kurang fit. Namun, pelatih Arrigo Sacchi tetap menurunkannya melawan Brasil dalam final pertama yang berakhir lewat adu penalti.

Baggio akan selalu mengenang final 1994 itu sebagai kenangan paling buruk dalam kariernya. Ia gagal mengeksekusi penalti terakhir sehingga timnya kalah 2-3 setelah kedua tim bermain seri tanpa gol selama 120 menit.

Brasil menjadi tim paling solid di semua lini. Mereka hanya kebobolan tiga gol dalam tujuh laga. Gelandang mereka sangat berperan membantu pertahanan yang sudah begitu kuat. Di depan, Romario dan Bebeto bisa dilepas berduaan dan menuai hasil manis. Keduanya sama-sama berambisi mengakhiri 24 tahun paceklik juara dan berhasil mewujudkannya di Los Angeles. Romario pun diganjar anugerah Pemain Terbaik. 

World Cup 1998: Kejayaan "Tim Ayam Jantan"

PERANCIS memang terkenal sebagai negara yang mampu melahirkan pemain dan tim yang terbaik. Selain itu, Perancis bisa dibilang yang membidani lahirnya Piala Dunia. Adalah Jules Rimet yang bertahun-tahun menjadi presiden FIFA merupakan orang berusaha keras untuk memperkenalkan Piala Dunia. Walau Perancis pelopor, taji "Tim Ayam Jantan" tidak cukup tajam pada kompetisi ini. Pada 1938, "Les Blues" dipercaya untuk menggelar ajang ini untuk ketiga kalinya, memiliki kesempatan emas untuk menggondol piala. Namun, Perancis gagal unjuk gigi di rumahnya karena Italia yang menjadi jawara untuk kedua kalinya setelah mengalahkan Hungaria 4-2.

Piala Dunia terus bergulir. Meski begitu, "Les Blues" belum jua menjadi jawara di ajang ini. Mereka baru menorehkan catatan yang cukup baik pada Piala Dunia 1958 di Swedia. Saat itu, mereka berhasil menjadi juara ketiga setelah mengalahkan Jerman Barat 6-3. Mereka gagal menembus final setelah diempaskan Brasil, 2-5, di babak semifinal. Pada Piala Dunia ini, mereka melahirkan dua penyerang yang sangat andal yaitu, Raymond Kopa dengan julukan "Si Perancang" dan Just Fontaine yang berjuluk "Si Eksekutor". Tiga belas gol yang dicetak Fontaine untuk satu Piala Dunia masuh merupakan rekor hingga saat ini. Selanjutnya, Perancis kembali mencatat sejarah pada Piala Dunia 1986 di Meksiko. Saat itu, mereka kembali meraih perunggu setelah mengalahkan Belgia 4-2.

Pada 1998, Perancis kembali mendapat kehormatan untuk kembali menggelar Piala Dunia ke-16. Kejuaraan kali ini bisa dikatakan Piala Dunia yang cukup ideal. FIFA membuat kebijakan dengan melakukan penambahan delapan tim dari sebelumnya hanya mengikut sertakan 24 negara. Kebijakan ini membuka peluang yang lebih besar kepada negara di benua Afrika dan Asia. Masing grup juga mencerminkan pembagian yang sangat adil. Tiap-tiap grup dihuni oleh dua tim Eropa, satu tim Amerika, dan satu dari Asia atau Afrika. Kebijakan lainnya adalah dua dari 34 tim berhak lolos secara otomatis. Perancis mendapat jatah lolos karena menjadi tuan rumah dan Brasil sebagai juara bertahan.

Menjadi tuan rumah, harapan besar pun langsung membumbung tinggi dari seluruh masyarakat Perancis agar tim nasional kesayangannya bisa menggondol Piala Dunia di rumahnya sendiri. Federasi Sepak Bola Perancis (FFF) langsung menginstruksikan pelatih Aime Jacquet untuk mempersiapkan anak asuhnya dengan sangat matang.

Perancis tergabung bersama Denmark, Afrika Selatan, dan Arab Saudi menghuni Grup C. Dengan dukungan penuh suporter fanatiknya, pasukan yang dikomandani Jacquet berhasil lolos ke babak 16 besar dengan angka sempurna. Bagaimana tidak, Zinedine Zidane dkk berhasil menghancurkan Afrika Selatan 3-0, Saudi Arabia 4-0, dan Denmark 2-1. Denmark pun mendapat jatah tiket setelah berada di peingkat kedua dengan mengumpulkan poin empat.

Brasil dan Norwegia lolos ke babak 16 besar mewakili grup A. Pada laga perdana, Brasil yang berjuluk "Tim Samba" berhasil mengandaskan Skotlandia 2-1. Brasil meraih tiga angka setelah gol bunuh diri yang dilakukan Boyd pada menit ke-73. Di laga kedua, Ronaldo dkk bangkit dengan menggilas Maroko 3-0. Namun, rekor belum pernah kalah tersebut harus dipatahkan Norwegia dengan menudukkan "Tim Samba" 2-1. Meskipun demikian, Brasil berhak lolos bersama Norwegia yang berada di peringkat kedua dengan mengumpulkan enam poin.

Grup B menjadi grup yang sangat ketat. Italia bermain imbang 2-2 melawan Chili pada laga perdana. Di stadion De Toulouse, Kamerun imbang 1-1 melawan Austria. Meskipun demikian, Italia yang menjadi juara tiga kali menujukkan superioritasnya dengan mengalahkan Kamerun 3-0 dan Austria 2-1. Chili berhasil mendapat jatah tiket lolos karena rekor tidak terkalahkan di grup ini.

Dua tim Eropa, Spanyol dan Bulgaria bernasib apes berada di Grup D. Meski menang besar 6-1 atas Bulgaria, "Tim Matador", julukan Spanyol, harus tersingkir karena dikalahkan Nigeria 2-3, dan hanya bermain imbang 0-0 melawan Paraguay. Bulgaria pun tersingkir karena mengalami dua kekalahan dan satu kali imbang. Alhasil, Nigeria dan Paraguay yang berhak menjadi wakil dari grup D.

Belanda dan Meksiko lolos mewakili Grup E dengan menyingkirkan Belgia dan Korea Selatan. "Tim Negeri Kincir Angin" lolos setelah meraih kemenangan besar 5-0 atas Korea Selatan meski pada dua laga sebelumnya Denis Bergkamp dkk hanya memperoleh dua poin saat ditahan imbang Belgia 0-0 dan Meksiko 2-2. Nasib serupa juga dialamai Meksiko. Mereka berhasil mengkandaskan Korea Selatan 3-1 setelah pada dua laga ditahan imbang Belgia dan Belanda dengan skor akhir yang sama 2-2.

Grup F diwakili Jerman dan Yugoslavia. Kedua negara sama-sama mengumpulkan poin tujuh. "Tim Panser", julukan Jerman, berhasil mengalahkan Amerika Serikat dan Iran dengan skor akhir yang sama 2-0. Jerman gagal menjaga trek kemenangan setelah ditahan imbang Yugoslavia 2-2 di Stadion Felix Bollaert. Dalam duel tersebut, Jerman harus tertinggal terlebih dahulu berkat gol yang dicetak Mijatovic pada menit ke-13 dan Stojkovic pada menit ke-54. Namun, Jerman berhasil mengejar defisit gol setelah Mihajlovic melakukan gol bunuh diri pada menit ke-73 yang kemudian disamakan Jerman melalui gol yang dicetak Bierhoff pada menit ke-80.

Rumania dan Inggris berhasil lolos setelah menyingkirkan Kolombia dan Tunisia di Grup G. Sedangkan, Argentina dan Kroasia lolos setelah menyingkirkan Jamaikan dan Jepang di Grup H.

Jawara Piala Dunia 1966, Inggris harus angkat koper terlebih dahulu setelah dikalahkan Argentina melalui drama adu penalti di putaran kedua. Partai yang digelar di Stadion Geoffroy-Guichard yang dipadati 30.000 penonton berlangsung sengit. Bahkan, dua penalti pun terjadi di babak pertama. Babak kedua yang berakhir 2-2 penuh drama. Gelandang Inggris, David Beckham, diusir wasit Kim Nielsen (Denmark) karena "menendang" Diego Simeone. Bahkan, "The Three Lions

merasa dirugikan karena Nilesen menganulir gol Sol Campbell. Dalam drama adu penalti, Hernan Crespo dan Paul Ince gagal melesakkan bola pada tendangan kedua. "Tim Tanggo", julukan Argentina, berhasil lolos keperempat final setelah Batty gagal menunaikan tugasnya di tendangan terakhir. Namun, Argentina gagal melaju ke semifinal setelah ditundukkan Belanda 2-1 di Stadion Velodrome.

Langkah Jerman melaju ke babak final harus kandas. Krosia berhasil mengahancurkan "Tim Panser" 3-0 di perempat final berkat gol yang diciptakan Jarni, Vlaovic, dan Suker.

Sementara itu, tuan rumah berhasil lolos ke perempat final dengan mengalahkan Paraguay 1-0. Laurent Blanc menjadi pahlawan "Tim Ayam Jantan" dengan mencetak gol pada menit ke-113. Selanjutnya, langkah Perancis mulus dan berhasil lolos ke semifinal setelah mengalahkan Italia dalam drama adu penalti dengan skor akhir 4-3.

Pada babak semifinal, Brasil berhadapan dengan Belanda. Kedua tim tampil dengan kekuatan penuh. Meskipun demikian, hingga turum minum skor kacamata bertahan. Pada babak kedua, kedua tim langsung saling baku serang. Brasil unggul terlebih dahulu berkat gol yang dicetak Ronaldo pada menit ke-46. Dalam waktu yang tersisa, Brasil menjaga keunggulan hingga laga nomal usai. Namun, penyerang Belanda, Patrick Kluivert menjadi pahlawan bagi timnya setelah mencetak gol pada menit ke-86. Drama adu penalti pun harus digelar setelah kedua tim masih imbang di masa perpanjangan waktu. "Tim Samba" mendapat ke final setelah Philip Cocu dan Frank de Boel gagal mengeksekusi penalti.

Pada partai seminal lainnya, dengan dukungan penuh publik, Perancis berhasil melaju ke final dengan mengalahkan Kroasia 2-1. Tuan rumah nayris gagal melaju ke final setelah penyerang Kroasia, Davor Suker, mencetak gol pada menit ke-46. Beruntung, Perancis mempunyai bek Lilian Thuram. Sepasang gol Thuram pada menit ke-47 dan 69 meng

Pada partai semifinal lainnya, Perancis dibayangi kecemasan. Pasalnya, Kroasia tampil mengejutkan meski baru pertama kali merasakan ketatnya Piala Dunia. Bagaiman tidak, tim besutan Miroslav Blazevic ini berhasil menghancurkan Jerman 3-0 pada perempat final.
